In 1999 a series of handheld devices known as BlackBerry was released to the public by Research in Motion. A few years later, in 2002, Research in Motion released the famous BlackBerry Smartphone. Research in Motion is the leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of BlackBerry devices. It was founded by Mike Lazaridiz and is headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
